Lighting Up Like Joseph

Mary

The story of Joseph in the Bible serves as an inspiring blueprint for how we can live out our faith at the intersection of life, work, and relationships. Joseph’s journey—marked by challenges, betrayal, and eventual triumph—shows us how a person can honor God no matter where they are or what they face. Whether in prison, in the house of Potiphar, or as the Governor of Egypt, Joseph consistently demonstrated the Spirit of God working through him, earning the respect and trust of those around him.

In prison, despite being wrongfully imprisoned, Joseph's character stood out. The warden recognized the Spirit of God in him, and because of this, Joseph was given responsibility over the other prisoners. Similarly, when Joseph worked in Potiphar's house, his integrity and excellence made him a trusted servant. Potiphar could see that Joseph's success wasn’t from his own doing but was rooted in God’s favor. Eventually, as Governor of Egypt, Joseph’s wisdom—divinely inspired—saved nations, and Pharaoh trusted him with immense responsibility because he knew God was with him.

Joseph’s story echoes that of Caleb, who was described in the book of Numbers as having "a different spirit" from the rest. Caleb’s unwavering faith in God led him to stand out as a leader among his people. Both Joseph and Caleb were not afraid to shine for God, and their lives reflect how we, too, can let the light of Jesus shine in our own lives.

At the intersection of faith, life, and work, we can follow Joseph's example by honoring God first in everything we do. This means not compromising our values, choosing integrity over convenience, and performing our work with a spirit of excellence, as Joseph did. Just as Joseph’s success was a direct result of his faithfulness, we too can trust that when we put God first, He will empower us to thrive in any situation.

Moreover, Joseph was never shy about speaking up when God gave him wisdom and insight. Whether it was interpreting dreams in prison or offering counsel to Pharaoh, Joseph boldly used his gifts for God’s glory. In our own experiences, we can be ready to speak up and offer godly wisdom when the moment calls for it, knowing that God is the source of all understanding.

As you move through your day, ask yourself: How can you embody Joseph’s commitment to God in your work and daily responsibilities? How can you honor God through excellence, integrity, and wisdom, knowing that He is with you wherever you go? Like Joseph, we too can light up the world by reflecting God’s spirit in everything we do.

Here's to lighting up wherever we are!
