The New Testament letters of Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon have been called the Prison Epistles because they were written by Paul during his imprisonment at different times. For instance, in this passage, Paul writes:
“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.” - Philippians 1:12-14 NIV
This really intrigues me. In the midst of present difficulty, Paul was able to see beyond his discomfort and focus on the task at hand. He was able to use what was available to him to serve. He couldn’t travel with abandon, preaching the message of Jesus, but he could write. And write he did! These New Testament books are rich and powerful chronicles of Christ’s accomplishments and empowerment to those who put their trust in Him.
Where is your present prison? Is it a physical prison where your freedoms are limited? Is it a prison that places restrictions on how much time you have available? Is it a prison of limitations that you have perhaps, placed on yourself? Or limitations you have allowed others to place on you? Is it a prison in your career, your home, your relationships, or your comfort zone?
Dear Friend, I have 3 invitations for you.
Stop looking down at the disappointing turn of events, or the hopes and dreams you feel will never see the light of day.
Start looking up to the One Who called you, knows you, and loves you. He’s got a plan for your life even in the midst of that difficulty. Don’t stay stuck, look up!
Then look around; there are needs all around you. Think of how your unique gifts can satisfy those needs right where you are and with what you have. Reach out and begin to bless the people around you. You may not know it yet, but you are blessed to be a blessing!
Don’t let the chains deceive you into thinking you are incapable. If all you’ve got is pen and parchment, then write. Got a voice and nothing else? Then speak. Or sing. Want to preach to the ends of the earth but can’t afford to travel? Then knock on your neighbour’s door. Serve from your perceived imprisonment, and see what unlocks for you!
Called to serve,
M.
